Punakha

The small town of Punakha boasts lush meadows and terraced paddy fields, as well as two rivers—Wang Chhu and Mo Chhu—that flow through the valley.  Located three hours away from Thimphu, it is where the renowned Punakha Dzong is situated. Built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1637 and called the “Palace of Great Happiness,” this fortress sits at the confluence point of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.

Tourists can enjoy a variety of activities in the charming small town as part of an unforgettable sightseeing experience. The weather in Punakha is warmer than it is everywhere in the nation. Punakha is 1,200 meters above sea level and is famous for its rice farming.
