Located in Bhutan’s glacial Gangtey Valley, also known as Phobjikha Valley, the Gangtey Nature Trail is one of the country’s most scenic and accessible hiking routes. Popular among visitors for its breathtaking natural beauty, this trail offers a serene walk through some of Bhutan’s most pristine landscapes.
The trail begins at the Mani stone wall (similar to a Chhorten) just north of Gangtey Gonpa (Gangtey Monastery) and ends at Khewa Lhakhang, taking hikers through a peaceful blend of traditional villages, pine forests, and rhododendron groves. Along the way, travelers pass through Sumchubara village and enter a dense forest that opens up to a panoramic canopy offering spectacular views of the entire Phobjikha Valley.
In spring, the trail comes alive with blooming rhododendrons in shades of pink, crimson, and violet, turning the surrounding woodlands into a vivid tapestry of color. During winter, the valley is blanketed in snow, and caramel-horned yaks can be seen grazing across the landscape, adding to the region’s unique alpine charm.
Renowned for its stunning natural scenery, Gangtey Nature Trail is one of Bhutan’s most enjoyable short hikes—ideal for both casual walkers and nature enthusiasts seeking a peaceful outdoor experience in the heart of the Himalayas.
